This Week in WVU Baseball
The Mountaineers will host Louisville for a three-game series this weekend at Hawley Field … The first two games will be part of a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 5 … the series finale begins Sunday, May 6 at 1 p.m.

Last Week in WVU Baseball
WVU was swept at Seton Hall over the weekend in BIG EAST action … WVU fell 11-9 on Friday, 3-1 on Saturday and 9-4 on Sunday.

Junior right fielder Brady Wilson led WVU at the plate over the weekend with a .462 average (6-for-13) with two runs, one double, one RBI and a walk … freshman center fielder Bobby Boyd continued his solid freshman campaign with six hits, three runs, one triple, one RBI and one stolen base over the weekend … sophomore first baseman Ryan McBroom and freshman second baseman Billy Fleming each had four RBIs … Saturday’s starting pitcher, Corey Walter, took the loss despite pitching a complete game … Walter allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

West Virginia competed at the Notre Dame Invitational, Saturday, on the Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis.

All four Mountaineer crews advanced to the Petite Finals of their events on Saturday … the varsity eight crew of Jenelle Spencer, Hilary Meale, Rachelle Purych, Kelly Kramer, Shannon Gribbons, Danielle Widecrantz, Karen Verwey, Courtney Schrand and coxswain Mallory Fisher finished in first place in its Petite Final against Rutgers with a time of 7:11.9 … the second varsity eight crew of Brittany Doss, Mollie Rosen, Danika Rencken, Rachel Cokeley, Jessica Kelly, Amanda Hirsch, Jessica Hurlbert, Lisa Deklau and coxswain Morgan Leach fell to Rutgers in its Petite Final with a time of 7:31.7 … the varsity four crew Rebecca Knecht, Brianna Dendler, Elizabeth Duarte, Tamyra Roberts and coxswain Ellen Shular defeated Rutgers in the Petite Final, crossing the line in 8:23.2 while the second varsity four of Bethany Anne Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Enya Messersmith, Kaitlyn Eason and coxswain Alexandra Basil placed third in its Petite Final behind Notre Dame and Iowa, having finished its race in 8:40.9.

West Virginia travels to the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships hosted by USF from Friday through Sunday, May 4-6, in Tampa, Fla.

The Mountaineers split to send select athletes to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., and the Ashland Alumni Open in Ashland, Ohio … making her first appearance of the outdoor season at the Penn Relays, senior Kaylyn Christopher finished in sixth place in the 3,000-meter run with a career-best time of 9:47.86, beating her old mark of 9:51.85 from 2010 … freshman Letitia Propst ran her first career 3,000-meter with success by placing 17th in 10:13.56 at the Penn Relays … in Friday’s hammer throw at the Ashland Open, senior Terina Miller led the way for the Mountaineers with a 53.82-meter throw for fourth place in the event, her fourth-best distance of the outdoor season junior Heather Adams placed eighth in the event at 52.94 meters, her third-best mark of the outdoor season and just short of her personal-best distance of 53.29 meters … Alanna Pritts earned a career-best distance of 42.24 meters in the hammer throw, topping her previous personal record of 41.72 meters set last week at the Larry Ellis Invitational … Adams earned a second-best career discus throw of 45.89 meters for third place in the event Saturday at the Ashland Open ... freshman Karissa Knabenshue threw the discus 41.57 meters, her second-best personal record, for seventh place in the field … she also competed in the shot put with success, earning an 11.27-meter distance for 13th place in the event.

The 42.24-meter hammer throw by Alanna Pritts replaces her previous best of 41.72 meters, which now stands as the fifth-best WVU all-time distance for the event … Miller (55.25 meters) and Adams (53.29 meters) own the top two all-time distances in the event for WVU … a total of 18 athletes have qualified for 14 events at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships … the Mountaineers look to achieve a Top-20 national finish for a fifth consecutive year in outdoor track.
