MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team is set to begin its 2012 spring schedule tomorrow with two matches against Pitt beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Fitzgerald Field House.
“For us, we have a lot of things that we want to get done this spring but the main thing and most important thing is that this group of girls really become a solid unit, competes hard and wants to win matches that we are playing in the spring,” coach Jill Kramer says. “That is one thing we have been talking about a lot. Our strengths as a group this spring are completely different then the strengths that we will have in the fall, but we are going to train and play to our strengths this spring so that we are playing smart and competitive.”
Competing for the first time this weekend as Mountaineers will be freshmen Brittany Sample and junior Arielle Allen. Both joined the team in January 2012 with Sample graduating early from Hebron High in Texas and Allen transferring from NJCAA national runner-up Western Wyoming Community College.
“Right now we have six players for the spring,” says Kramer. “Two of them are completely new to our system. Brittany is setting and Arielle was an AVCA and NJCAA second team All-American as a middle blocker. We are moving Arielle to the outside because we think she has the tools to do that. She has a good size and is physical enough to be good enough on the outside in the Big 12. A lot of the spring for us is them working into our systems and us learning about them as players.”
WVU will resume their spring schedule on March 24 where the Mountaineers will head to George Mason to take on the Patriots.
After spring break, the team will host James Madison along with their annual coaches’ clinic on April 14. The coaches’ clinic will begin at 10 a.m. with both teams competing in drills before ending the day with a match in the afternoon.
The Mountaineers will end their spring season with an Alumni match and year-end banquet on April 28.
